TomTom Go 720 Won''t start up
Got one of these yesterday but unfortunately it's not working anymore!! Connected it to the pc this morning and tried to update it - all seemed well until we disconnected the device and tried to turn it on = it now comes up with a white flashing cross in a red circle and what looks like a hard drive sign. Unfortunately I didn't think of backing the thing up seen as it was brand new - I know I am stupid! So any ideas on how I can solve this? |
I have the same problem. Was working fine, but after updating it - it now doesn't work. Has the same white flashing cross in a red circle next to a picture of the TomTom. TomTom support is closed today (12-26-2007) :( I did back mine up before update but still doesn't work after restore. |
I have the same problem too - got a Go 520T for Xmas, backed up, updated the software, just get the flashing cross in a red circle. Have tried resetting and also restoring from the backup, but same result. I have yet to see the damn thing working at all. Accounts of the quality of Tomtom service here and on other sites leads me to doubt the value of pursuing them for help. (Also their web site has slowed from snail's pace during today and is now completely inaccessible.) Unless someone can suggest a workable solution, it's going back to the shop PDQ.

Glad i'm not the only one! We're taking it back tomorrow in the hope that they will replace it rather than having to deal with support! |
I phoned Tomtom support this morning - got through surprisingly quickly - and they have got me up and running in 12 minutes! The procedure in short was to connect to the computer, trash everything on the Tomtom hard disk that was NOT in a folder, then reinstall the missing application from scratch. When I unplugged the Tomtom from the Mac (without switching it off) it rebooted itself and I saw the initial setup screens for the first time. Might be worth a try for you too (you two!). |
Thank you Grumpiestt!!! Called just a moment ago - was on hold for a few minutes and then got to speak to some nutty bloke who was really helpful! Was all done in a few minutes. Had to do similar to you, delete all loose files and then reinstall. Am very happy now as I don't have to face the queues in town!! Now off to do do a backup! XAaron - hope you have as much luck as us getting your tomtom up and running!

Finally got through to customer support and now mine is also up and running. Thanks Grumpiest and Magicowen! |
Hi guys I had the same problem, I have just received my new TomTom Go 720, done updates and.....white cross on red circle flashing with the next start up. I have spent the whole Saturday evening and the whole Sunday trying to fix the problem. I went through every post on different forums and tried different things including: formatting device, reseting it, coping files, pasting files, dozen of installations using old and new version of Home Software. I have done literally everything I could following other people advises. Nothing worked. All I managed to do was to get to the stage where red circle does not appear anymore but it got stuck with on the start up showing me either black screen with TomTom on it or the screen with the crossroads. The only way to switch it off was through reset button. Sometimes It let me chose what map I want to use but after that it reseted itself continuously. But finally I have solved my problem and my device is working as it was originally. I need to underline that I have done backup before I downloaded updates and a new map BUT after restoring that backup using HOME2 it did not help at all. What I have done is very simple. I went to the folder where my backup is kept and copied and pasted all the files from there onto my device. it worked!!! Something tells me it could be something to do with the map i updated as after i have done some fixes it let me chose the map but did not go any further. After I pasted files from my backup my TT started immediately with no problems at all. Good luck guys. |
Thanks Grumpiestt - off on a trip on Wednesday thought I'd update my go720 tonight and it trashed, wouldn't start at all. Followed your advice and got it all back. |
YEP yet another victim of the tom tom update. Oops! no backup. As it is the weekend I cannot contact the helpdesk so I was wondering if any of you helpful people would have a clean version of the core files from backup I could use to restore my 720?
HELP!!!!!!!! |
The firmware is free and available through home. It's your maps you need to have backed up more than anything. The info on the Red X is on the 2nd sticky. |
It seems nothing is that easy with TomTom.
Can you please give me idiot proof directions to the info / firmware you mentioned?
Cheers |
